The next SQE1 sitting is January 2027: FLK1 on 11–15 January 2027 and FLK2 on 18–22 January 2027. The SRA’s seat reservation form was sent on 22 September 2026 from 6pm and closed at 5pm on 24 September 2026. Payment requests run from 19 October 2026 (10am) to 18 November 2026 (5pm). Booking closes on 23 November 2026.

How booking works for January 2027
What happens after the form, and how to book if you did not complete it: the SQE1 seat reservation form, 22 September to 24 September.
- Before 22 September 2026: account set-up. Registration, ID verification and the pre-booking steps, including the diversity survey and the reasonable adjustments question, had to be complete. The SRA says you will not receive a seat reservation form unless these are done. They must also be complete before you can book directly. If you completed the diversity survey before, the SRA says it has been updated: you must go back to it, reconfirm your answers and complete the new section at the end, or you cannot book your next assessment.
- 22 September 2026 to 24 September 2026: the seat reservation form (now closed). It went to registered SQE email addresses from 6pm on 22 September 2026, and the deadline was 5pm on 24 September 2026. The SRA allocates seats in the order forms were received. The same deadline applied to accepting reasonable adjustments.
- 19 October 2026 (10am) to 18 November 2026 (5pm): pay. The SRA emails a request for payment in this window. You must pay within 48 hours of receiving it or the seat is cancelled.
- 19 November 2026 (10am) to 23 November 2026 (5pm): reschedule if you need to. Subject to availability, through the Bookings page in your SQE account.
Did not complete a seat reservation form? A limited number of seats can be booked directly in your SQE account from 19 November 2026 (10am) to 23 November 2026 (5pm), subject to availability. What changes in January 2027
From January 2027 each of FLK1 and FLK2 is 170 questions, sat as two 85-question sessions of 2 hours 33 minutes. That is 340 questions in total, about 1 minute 48 seconds a question. Each session now tests a set group of subjects:
- FLK1 session 1: Business Law and Practice, Dispute Resolution, Legal Services
- FLK1 session 2: Tort, Contract Law, Legal Systems (Legal System of England and Wales; Constitutional and Administrative Law and EU Law)
- FLK2 session 1: Wills and the Administration of Estates, Solicitors Accounts (in the context of Wills), Trusts Law, Land Law
- FLK2 session 2: Property Law and Practice, Solicitors Accounts (in the context of Property), Criminal Liability, Criminal Law and Practice
Ethics and Professional Conduct can still be tested in any session, and questions are still randomised within a session. The changes apply to first sitters and resitters. The SRA’s announcement (10 September 2026).
The SRA is consulting on changes to the syllabus. On its timetable they do not apply to the 2027 sittings and would first be assessed in January 2028: see the proposed SQE1 syllabus changes.

A doctor negligently prescribes a drug to a patient, causing the patient to be admitted to hospital with internal bleeding. While in hospital and recovering well, the patient is treated by a second doctor who, acting in a way that no competent doctor could possibly justify, administers a grossly excessive and plainly contraindicated dose of an unrelated medication. That second act causes a fresh and serious injury — kidney failure — which was wholly unconnected with the original bleeding and would not otherwise have occurred.
