What changes in January 2027

From January 2027 each SQE1 paper has 170 questions, taken as two sessions of 85 questions, each lasting 2 hours 33 minutes. The questions in each session come from set subjects. For FLK1, the first session covers Business Law and Practice, Dispute Resolution and Legal Services, and the second covers Tort, Contract Law and Legal Systems. For FLK2, the first session covers Wills and the Administration of Estates, Trusts Law, Land Law and Solicitors Accounts in the context of wills, and the second covers Property Law and Practice, Criminal Liability, Criminal Law and Practice and Solicitors Accounts in the context of property. Within each session the questions appear in random order, and ethics and professional conduct are examined across every session.

Most preparation products were written for the earlier format of 180 questions in two sessions of 90. A 90-question mock is still useful practice, but it does not reproduce the 2027 timing or the subject grouping, so check this column before you rely on a provider's mocks for a 2027 sitting.

Quotation marks show a provider's own wording. "Not stated" means we did not find the figure on the provider's public pages on 18 October 2026. Kaplan SQE Ltd delivers the SQE assessments for the SRA; we did not find an SQE1 preparation product sold by Kaplan. Altior's SQE preparation page now redirects to BARBRI.

How to choose

Start with how you learn. A course gives you taught content, a timetable and a person to ask, and it is worth the cost if you need that structure or an employer pays. If you can work from the SRA specification yourself, the deciding factor is practice: enough single-best-answer questions across every subject, answered at the pace of the exam, with an explanation that tells you why each wrong option is wrong.

Then check three things on any product. First, whether its law is stated as at the SRA's cutoff for your sitting. Second, whether its mocks match the 2027 paper length and session grouping. Third, how it reports your performance: whether it breaks your results down by subject, whether it compares them with the pass standard, and whether it explains the limits of that comparison.

Where Lawdojo fits

Lawdojo is a question bank and trainer for candidates who prepare on their own or alongside a course. It has questions in each of the 137 topic areas into which it divides the FLK1 and FLK2 specification, gives a worked answer with sources on every question, and offers an AI tutor on every question (fair use, about 300 messages a month). After a mock or diagnostic, it shows your score with a 95% statistical range against a 56 to 60% comparison band that Lawdojo sets near the historical pass standard. This is not a predicted exam score. Its five full mocks (ten 180-question papers, five for each of FLK1 and FLK2) currently use the 180-question format in force up to July 2026. You can start with the free 25-question diagnostic, which needs no card.

Practise at the real standard

In July 2026, 58% of candidates graded on both papers did not pass SQE1. The free 25-question diagnostic shows where you stand.

Common questions

What is the best SQE1 prep?

It depends on how you study. If you want taught content and deadlines, the online courses from BARBRI, QLTS School, College of Legal Practice and Law Training Centre cost about £2,000 to £3,300, and the full SQE1 courses from The University of Law and BPP cost £4,300 to £7,100. If you can study from the SRA specification and revision materials yourself, a question bank used at exam pace is the core of your preparation, and the tables above show what each one states it includes. We publish Lawdojo, so check every figure on this page against the providers’ own sites.

Which SQE1 prep providers have updated for the January 2027 format?

From January 2027 each SQE1 paper (FLK1 and FLK2) has 170 questions, taken as two sessions of 85, and each session draws its questions from a fixed set of subjects, in random order within the session. When we checked on 18 October 2026, BARBRI’s FAQ described 85-question practice tests and a 340-question simulated exam for its SQE1 Prep course, and Revise SQE said new editions of its mock books were due in early November. QLTS School, College of Legal Practice, Law Training Centre, AntLaw, The University of Law, BARBRI’s separate SQE1 Mocks product and Lawdojo still described 90-question sessions or 180-question papers. BPP, CELE SQE, LearnSQE and YourLegalLadder did not state the length of their mocks.

What is the cheapest way to prepare for SQE1?

Self-study. The SRA publishes the assessment specification and sample questions free. Add a question bank: the options above range from a free app with in-app purchases to £575 a month. The exam itself costs £2,006 (£1,003 for each paper) for assessments from September 2026, and that fee is the same whichever preparation you choose.

Do I need a full course to pass SQE1?

No course is required. A course earns its cost if you want taught structure, accountability and a tutor, or if an employer pays. Disciplined candidates can prepare from the specification, revision materials and a strong question bank. In July 2026, 42% of candidates graded on both papers passed SQE1, and 47% of first-attempt candidates did, so practice under exam conditions matters whichever route you take.

How does Lawdojo compare with the big courses?

Lawdojo is a question bank and trainer, not a taught course. It has 2,263 questions across the 137 topic areas into which it divides the SQE1 specification, five full mocks, each with an FLK1 and an FLK2 paper of 180 questions, a worked answer with sources and an AI tutor on every question (fair use, about 300 messages a month), and a readiness check that compares your mock score with a band near the historical pass standard (not a predicted score). It costs £99 to 22 January 2027, or £39 for 30 days. A course adds taught content and a human tutor; the courses on this page cost from £1,750 to £7,100. Some candidates use a course and a question bank together.
