SQE1 sample questions: the free SRA set, and how to use it
The SRA gives you 220 free SQE1 sample questions across FLK1 and FLK2. They come in two sets: 130 pre-tested questions taken from real SQE1 exams, now published with the exact share of candidates who got each one right, and the original set of 90. They are the best free resource you have — and most people use them wrong.
Where to get the free SRA sample questions
All 220 are free on the SRA’s SQE site, split into the two sets. Download both the FLK1 and FLK2 papers from the official SQE sample questions page. Treat the 130 pre-tested questions most seriously: real candidates sat them, and the SRA now shows you how hard each one actually was.
How to use them properly
- Timed, closed-book, one sitting. The real exam gives you about 1m42s a question with nothing in front of you. Doing samples untimed with notes open flatters your score and tells you nothing about readiness.
- Use the performance data. For the 130 pre-tested questions the SRA tells you what share of candidates answered correctly. Miss one that 80% got right, and that is a priority gap.
- Save a set for the end. Keep a clean FLK1 and FLK2 set back as a genuine mock in your final fortnight, rather than burning all 220 in week one.

Two friends carry on a catering partnership. Their partnership agreement provides that, before profits are shared equally, one partner is to receive a 'salary' of £20,000 in recognition of the longer hours she works, and both partners are to receive interest of 5% on their fixed capital contributions of £40,000 each. In 2026/27 the partnership's trading profit is £120,000. A trainee solicitor is asked to explain the income tax treatment of the £20,000 'salary' paid to the partner.
Why 220 free questions is not a study plan
The real SQE1 is 360 single-best-answer questions (180 in FLK1, 180 in FLK2), across the whole of the Functioning Legal Knowledge syllabus — 137 areas from contract and tort to land, trusts, business, criminal, dispute resolution, property, wills and solicitors’ accounts. 220 samples is not even one full exam’s worth of practice, spread across all of that.
To prepare, you need to answer hundreds of questions at genuine exam difficulty, across every topic, with worked answers that give you the rule and why each wrong option is wrong. That volume, at that standard, is the difference between recognising the law and recalling it under time.
